What to NOT pack for a beach vacation

Packing for a beach vacation is exciting, but it's just as important to know what not to bring to avoid unnecessary bulk, potential damage, or just plain inconvenience. The last thing anyone wants to do is overpack, and lug it all into a suitcase to bring it back home hardly used.

Whenever packing I always try to pack lite and smart, lugging a 50 plus pound bag through the airport is NOT where it is at. All that work to bring more than half of your suitcase back home with hardy anything worn, Always if you can pack it all in a carry on, it is the way to go, best part about it... You do not have to worry about lost luggage!!

Here's a list of things you should probably leave at home when heading to the beach:

Things That Can Get Damaged or Ruined:

  • Expensive Jewelry: Saltwater, sand, and sunscreen can damage precious metals and stones. It's best to leave your valuable pieces at home. Opt for inexpensive, waterproof jewelry if you want to accessorize. If you do want to bring it, wear it or keep it in a special jewelry box and bring it with you do not check any expensive items!!

  • Delicate Clothing: Avoid bringing clothes made of delicate fabrics like silk or fine linen that can easily snag, stain, or be damaged by saltwater and sun.

  • Dressy or Formal Wear: Unless you have a specific event planned, formal attire is usually unnecessary for a beach vacation. Pack comfortable, casual clothes instead.

  • Unnecessary Electronics: While your phone is likely essential, consider leaving behind extra tablets, laptops (unless needed for work).

  • Anything You're Worried About Getting Wet or Sandy: This might seem obvious, but think about items like leather goods (bags, shoes), non-waterproof tech, or anything irreplaceable.

Things That Are Inconvenient or Unnecessary:

  • Too Many Shoes: You likely only need a few pairs: flip-flops or sandals, maybe a pair of water shoes, and perhaps one comfortable pair for evenings out (if needed). Bulky sneakers or heels can take up valuable space, and lets face it, we want all the room for the cute clothing!

  • Excessive Toiletries: Most hotels or rentals provide basic toiletries. Stick to travel-sized essentials and consider purchasing some items (like bulky sunscreen) at your destination if needed. Grab some fillable bottles for your products you must have!

  • Heavy Books: While relaxing with a book is great, heavy hardcovers can add unnecessary weight. Consider a lightweight e-reader or a few paperbacks. Or upload a book to your kindle or Ipad!

  • Valuable Documents You Don't Need: Leave your passport at home if you're not traveling internationally. Only bring essential IDs and travel confirmations.

  • Too Much Cash: Carry a reasonable amount of cash, but rely more on credit or debit cards for larger purchases to avoid loss or theft.

  • Things Your Accommodation Provides: Check with your hotel or rental about amenities like beach towels, chairs, umbrellas, or even small kitchen appliances to avoid packing duplicates.

  • Hairspray and Excessive Styling Products: The salty air and humidity will likely make elaborate hairstyles futile. Embrace a more natural look.

  • Scented lotions/perfumes: Keep them at home, bugs love that stuff!!

  • Glass Containers: For safety reasons around the beach and pool areas, avoid bringing food or drinks in glass containers. Opt for plastic or reusable alternatives.

By carefully considering what you don't need, you can pack lighter, protect your belongings, and have a more enjoyable and stress-free beach vacation!
